Breitling watches have been manufactured since 1884, when Léon Breitling founded the brand. In 1892, a Breitling watch was so sought after that a factory was opened in La Chaux-de-Fonds. For over 130 years they have supplied watches primarily associated with pilots.
In 1979, Ernest Schneider took over the Breitling reins and not only led the brand through the devastating quartz crisis, but also saw the watchmaker flourish with renewed vigor.
The Breitling Chronomat was born in 1940 with the application for a Swiss government patent for a then-innovative winding mechanism to complement a chronograph worn on the wrist. The first examples of the Breitling Chronomat were manufactured and sold in 1941-42, and its success laid the foundation for future Breitling models.
In the late 1960s, a Breitling Chronomat became the first watch to house an automatic chronograph movement. Breitling was sold in 1979 by ex-pilot Ernest Schneider. That same year, Schneider began developing a variant of the Breitling Chronomat for the Italian Frecce Tricolori Jet team, customised to suit their specific needs. In 1984, the Breitling Chronomat re-launched as a pure pilot's watch.
