The Breitling Navitimer developed in 1952 and commissioned by AOPA, the US Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association, which wanted to develop a new chronograph for its members. This was at a time when calculations of average speed, fuel consumption, distance travelled at different speeds, were calculations and estimates the pilot had to make manually.
Willy Breitling created an instrument that mechanically solved many of these calculations. When AOPA received the result, the Breitling Navitimer was an instant success! A few years later, in 1956, the Breitling Navitimer launched the iconic 806 reference to the public. In 1965, the Navitimer was given contrasting sub-dials and a fluted bezel. Its popularity now rose to a level where stars like Miles Davis and Jo Siffert seen wearing it.
