Since its introduction in 1953, the Rolex Submariner has probably been one of the world's most defining models in the steel sports watch category. The dial, its discrete indexes, the characteristic "Mercedes" hour hand. The Rolex Submariner was also the first Rolex model that was clearly a sports watch. There are countless Rolex Submariner references, many of which are insanely sought-after collector's items, 5513 and 16800 being two examples.

A Submariner with a dial that has yellowed beautifully over the years commands significant prices, even higher if the box, papers and interesting provenance accompany it. A vintage Rolex Submariner should be kept in its original condition as much as possible. Never, ever change any external visible details. Never polish the case either. This greatly reduces the value of the watch. Only the movement and function should be serviced. A dial or insert in the rotating ring that has faded and acquired a patina is one of the most sought-after details in the watch world.
