Sebago was established in the US region of New England by entrepreneurial trio Daniel Wellehan, William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau. At its inception in 1946, the brand produced hand-sewn penny loafers, but is now most well-known for the iconic Dockside boat shoes it began producing in the 1970s. With its strong connections to the world of sailing, Sebago is a proud sponsor of the Americas Cup.
The open waters in and around New England are an integral part of the local culture, and the location of many of the region’s most popular leisure activities. It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that it takes its name from one of the regions many lakes, Sebago Lake in southern Maine. The word Sebago itself comes from the indigenous Abenaki language and simply means “large water”.
