Gloverall's origins can be traced back to 1950 and the military's request that Harold & Freda Morris, then purveyors of Gloves and Overalls, help them to sell surplus duffle coats from WWII. On the back of the model's success, Gloves and Overalls shifted focus to become Gloverall, considered by many as the original duffle coat brand.
The word 'duffle' originally denoted a thick, woollen fabric produced in the Belgian town of Duffel. These days, the word tends instead to bring to mind the garment we know as the duffle coat. These coats were originally used by the British Royal Navy, as their distinctive toggles could easily be fastened while wearing gloves and in the face of chilling sea winds.
