We may not be running experts, but in our editorial team you'll find everything from trail enthusiasts who thrive on muddy paths, to marathon runners chasing new personal bests on tarmac, and all-rounders just looking for a smooth after-work jog. As part of the Runners of Tomorrow concept, we tested this season’s running shoes – from technical trail models to responsive road runners – to see which ones truly deliver, regardless of terrain, ambition or running style.
This shoe from New Balance puts comfort first, with a soft mesh upper and a well-cushioned Fresh Foam X sole. It is suitable for both short recovery jogs and long, slow runs – and thanks to its stability, it offers a smooth running experience without feeling heavy. The outsole design performs well across various surfaces.
Tested by: Adam – the all-rounder. Ran approximately 120 kilometres at varying paces and on mixed surfaces – mostly on asphalt.
Pros:
✅ Soft and comfortable fit
✅ Excellent cushioning for long runs
✅ Stable grip on different surfaces
Good to know:
– Slightly small in size – consider going up half a size
– Not built for speed – limited energy return

The Norda 001 is a lightweight and durable trail shoe with excellent fit and grip that never lets you down. The Vibram® MegaGrip outsole performs in all conditions, and the shoe feels both stable and agile on technical terrain. It is a bit stiff on harder surfaces, but offers great ground contact, enhancing the overall running feel.
Tested by: Agnes – the trail runner. Runs about 30 kilometres a week at moderate to easy pace in forest terrain, gravel roads and some asphalt.
Pros:
✅ Outstanding grip in any weather
✅ Secure, glove-like fit
✅ Lightweight and stable
✅ Bonus points for the design
Things to consider:
– Stiff on asphalt and hard-packed gravel
– Better suited for longer trail runs

The Ferrari of the trail world delivers on all fronts – the HOKA Tecton X 2 is an ultralight, fast shoe that truly has it all. While it has made appearances on podiums at the world’s most prestigious races, it also works brilliantly for us mere mortals chasing weekend adventures. Two qualities stand out: comfort and speed. The shoe features a Matryx® upper for breathability and comfort, paired with Litebase outsoles – a lighter, lower-profile trail sole that does not sacrifice grip or stability, but instead increases efficiency and ground feel.
Tested by: David – trail runner. Clocked approximately 600 km on various surfaces and distances, from 5 km to 100 km+.
Pros:
✅ Versatile – performs well across many surfaces and distances
✅ Rocket-fast – lightweight in both feel and design
✅ Durable – do not underestimate its sophisticated and lightweight construction
Things to consider:
While the shoe excels in many areas, it cannot do it all. If you need something highly specific – like extra toe protection for extreme alpine terrain or enhanced grip for very muddy conditions – you might want to consider more specialized models.
