With roots stretching back to the 1940s, Tudor has cultivated a loyal following in the watch world. One of their most acclaimed models in recent years is the Tudor Black Bay, a watch that not only carries the legacy of its previous generations but also incorporates modern touches and innovations.
The Tudor Black Bay has its roots in Tudor's rich heritage of diver's watches from the 1950s and 1960s. The first Black Bay model, introduced in 2012 has since become one of the brand's most appreciated models. Taking inspiration from classic Tudor and Rolex models such as the Submariner and other diver's watches, Black Bay has created its own identity that is appreciated by both new and experienced watch enthusiasts.
One of the main features of the Tudor Black Bay is its robust construction and high performance. The watch offers water resistance of up to 200 metres, suitable for professional diving. It is equipped with a reliable automatic movement and is available in several different sizes as well as with different variants of straps and colours of the bezel.
In terms of design, Black Bay elegantly combines vintage-inspired elements with modern detailing. The characteristic bezel, the distinctive dials and the iconic 'snowflake' hands give the watch its unique look that is instantly recognisable.
Today, there are a plethora of different varieties of Black Bay. We try to sort out the differences by sharing our three favourites over the model's 12-year lifespan.
Black Bay 58 (All references)Many consider Black Bay 58 to be the most successful release in many years. With its 39mm case size, 12mm thickness and a strap width of 20mm, it meets most requirements. Add an "in-house" movement with 70 hours of power reserve, and you have a watch that outperforms most other brands in the same price range.
Black Bay Chrono ”Panda” Ref: M79360N-0002
Inspired by the big brother Rolex Daytona and their 60s chronographs, in 2021 Tudor released two new variants of the Black Bay Chrono. The watches have a case diameter of 41mm, are water resistant to 200 metres and have black and white dials with contrasting sub seconds.
Black Bay GMT Ref: 79830RB
The GMT was an instant hit when in 2018 it was first shown to the public. Its signature "Pepsi" coloured bezel in red and blue quickly made it a favourite among enthusiasts. With a price close to a third of what the equivalent model at Rolex costs, it is absolutely justified to call this watch affordable.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that Black Bay has a given place in many people's collections. Whether you are looking for a chronograph, diver's watch or a GMT model, there's something for you here. While the similarities to its big brother Rolex are obvious, we believe that Tudor have managed to create a unique identity at a fraction of the price.
