Winter, at least here in Scandinavia, brings with it slush, cold, and a feeling of unending darkness, making it the perfect time to stay indoors, light a few candles, pour a glass of your favourite beverage, and bring on the board games. In this article, we present three boardgames for both casual players and committed strategists, and also tell you how to dress like a winner.
Getting together with friends around a well-made, wooden boardgame offers a far more immersive experience than anything on your PS5. Classic backgammon is a popular choice and is just one of the games that can be played using this multi-game set from Manopoulos. So, when you and your fellow players begin to tire of shaking dice and keeping track of counters, you can simply flip the board over and try your hand at something else. If you are more strategically inclined, this set also contains all you will need for an intense game of chess and, for those who prefer a more casual experience, the board can also be used for the traditional, family games of ludo and snakes and ladders.
A source of entertainment on a date, the reason for an impromptu get-together with friends and family, or simply a way to pass the time – a set of playing cards has a given place in almost any household. Playing cards can be used for everything from all-night sessions of Bridge or Chicago to almost overly simplistic games in the vein of Go Fish. One of the main advantages of card games, though, is that they often give you the chance to chat, listen to music, and enjoy a drink together all while playing an entertaining game.
If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, a classic poker night might be the answer. In contrast to the convivial atmosphere of the card games we previously mentioned, poker demands a more hardened, determined approach. Have you been dealt a low hand? Would you really rather be playing Go Fish? Just keep bluffing. Use your big blind, spin your chips absent-mindedly in your fingers, and raise the stakes. The secret to the perfect poker look is finding the perfect balance of confident and blasé. To give your opponents as little chance as possible to read your facial expressions, we suggest pulling your hood up, putting on your sunglasses, and pulling down your cap.
