Those of us used to living small know all too well how a bookcase tends to dominate a room. Much more than a simple piece of furniture, a bookshelf attracts attention, sparks curiosity, and encourages conversation. Just like a wardrobe, the contents of a bookshelf say a lot about a person, not just who they are, but also who they want to be. This is why we encourage all our readers to fill their shelves with things that interest them, whether it be books, ornaments, or art. As guide to help you on your way, we suggest ten items to add a dash of personality to your bookshelf.
Books
This may seem rather obvious, but if there’s one thing every bookshelf needs, it’s books. To break up the rows of novels and literary classics, try placing a few small piles of large coffee table books in carefully chosen spots along the shelves.
Scented Candles
A scented candle not only offers a pleasant fragrance, but it also makes for the ideal makeshift bookstand. Just be careful where you put it when lit.
Ornaments
A Leather Coin Tray
When placed in the centre of your bookshelf, a cleanly designed leather tray is the perfect way to store keys, watches, and other small items you want to keep at hand.
Artwork
Keeping a framed artwork on a bookshelf may sound like an odd suggestion, but with the right placement, the artwork can harmonise beautifully with the surrounding books. If you prefer sculptures, these are just as suitable, if not more, for placing on a bookshelf, especially when placed on top of a book.
Bartending Tools
If your bookcase has a cupboard or similar space, this can be the perfect location for storing your home bar. With some beautiful glassware and a drinks tray on the shelf above, you will always be ready to offer your guests an evening libation.
A Clock
It has been said that the digital revolution has eliminated almost all practical need for a wall or desk clock, but it is nevertheless nice to just glance over at your bookshelf to check what the time is without having to get your phone out.
Framed Photographs
Photographs of places you’ve visited, experiences you’ve had, or your nearest and dearest have a given place in your bookcase, and a beautiful frame can transform even the most amateurish images to an impressive addition to your home décor.
Boardgames
Whether you’re a chess master or tend to lose to your kids in games of snakes and ladders, a well-made boardgame is a particularly elegant addition to any bookshelf. Its effect can be enhanced if the pieces are laid out as if you’ve been caught mid-game.
Room Spray
Used as a complement to your scented candle, a room spray becomes what can most easily be described your home’s signature scent – perfect for spritzing around the living room just before your guests arrive.
