It is no news that the Danes excel in timeless design and lighting classics. They have a strong design tradition dating back to the 20th century, with prominent designers. Their influence and ideas have set the tone for Danish design and influenced its reputation internationally. In this article, we look closer at three icons that have survived the test of time - from ceiling to floor. However, what makes them stand out from the crowd? A common denominator for all three lamps seems to be their ability to illuminate people's lives in a double sense – generation after generation. In addition, they can create an appealing atmosphere and contribute to a sense of timelessness that makes them something more than just functional furniture.
Several timeless roof lights deserve a place on this list. But one that stands from the rest, often seen in living rooms, dining rooms and other common areas where even lighting is desired. I am of course talking about the PH 5 lamp, designed by the Danish architect Poul Henningsen, for the lighting company Louis Poulsen. Its innovative lighting design and characteristic appearance have made it a symbol of timeless Danish design. Poul Henningsen was known for his interest in light and technical innovations and there are no exceptions with this lamp. It has three round shades, each of different sizes that are carefully designed and positioned to direct the light downwards while minimising glare. The lamp's shades are made of hand-blown opal glass, which provides an even and pleasant cast of light. The screens are available in several colour variants. Select the colour that appeals to you the most, to make an impression on the rest of the room. It can truly be said that the PH-5 lamp remains one of the most iconic and sought-after designer lights on the market.
In 1960, the Danes deliver once again, does that surprise us? No. Let me explain why. The AJ floor lamp is a sought-after lighting fixture designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen. Introduced in the 1960s, the lamp is best known for its elegant and functional design, which is characterised by a slightly curved rod that carries an elegant cone-shaped screen. The shape of the lamp gives a timeless expression and exemplifies Scandinavian design in its most captivating form. The lamp's screen and rod are made of metal and come in various options. Its adjustability makes it both versatile and practical. It is best suited as a reading lamp because the light can be directed, but it can also be placed in other places where functional lighting is necessary. For those who appreciate timeless and elegant lighting design, the AJ floor lamp is worth the investment. Its elegance and functionality make it a perfect companion in the home.
Speaking of Danish lighting design, it would be foolish to overlook the classic Flowerpot VP3 from 1968. The table lamp was designed by Danish architect and designer Verner Panton for the design company &Tradition. This lamp is not only functional but also a work of art representing the era of pop culture, when colourful designs were particularly sought after. What distinguishes this lamp from others is its characteristic shape, with two hemispherical screens mounted on top of each other, giving the shape of a flowerpot. The lamp is versatile and can be placed in the living room, bedroom, or other areas where a pleasant lighting is desired. It is made of lacquered metal and is available in a wide range of colours. The lamp has become a classic and continues to be a favourite because of its unique appearance and creative design.
